Newborn photoshoots are so different from any other shoots that I do in that the peace in the house during the shoot is off the charts. I love the crazy and the silly with family shoots, but there is something about being in a home with parents of a newborn that almost feels sacred.
This photoshoot in particular, I felt that feeling so much, especially with this sweet girl being the first baby of the family. Mom and Dad were nervous about moving her around, and we all moved quietly and gently around the house. I felt like I got to see what being a first time parent is like by being in their home with them. It really was a precious, awe-filled feeling.
And Baby did not disappoint to bring the cuteness! It took a little bit to get her to fall asleep, as nursing is still a new thing for a newborn, but I like to be there with the parents in the unknown. I like to keep the timing of newborn shoots a little flexible, especially for first time parents, because there is that learning curve. What does Baby need in this moment? Why is she crying? What can make him for comfortable? This is a photoshoot yes, but I understand that I’m also coming into your life when there’s a lot of new happening… a lot of change in norms.
That’s why I also love to do newborn shoots with more of a “lifestyle photoshoot” feel. I want to capture more than just the baby squish. I also make it my ambition to capture that ginger, gentle touch of holding your firstborn, the emotion in your eyes as you look at the miracle in your hands, and even how you put the headband upside down because you’ve never done it before. Yup, that’s in there ;) It’s all part of having a newborn, and it’s all beautiful.
