I had an absolute BLAST doing this family photoshoot with the R Family! We met at a Kansas City area park around golden hour, and they were gracious enough to walk about 10 minutes to this dream location my husband and I had scouted. He and I had scoured around this very large park looking for a tree-filled backdrop that would have magical backlighting. (It ended up being a cloudy day, so the lighting wasn’t as much of a thing to worry about, but it was still well worth the walk!)
I hadn’t anticipated — though in hindsight that feels silly — that the kids would enjoy running up and down the bridge so much! We had sooo many giggles playing Red Light Green Light and having a little dance party on the bridge. There were people out jogging and walking, all of which were so friendly, and it just felt like a fun day at the park — but with a camera involved.
I know that photoshoots can feel long and stiff and boring. I’ve done a few photoshoots myself, and let me tell you, I also get tired of cheesing after a while! And, I’m a full on adult. So, when it comes to my shoots — especially my photoshoots with littles, I want them to feel natural and just plain fun.
I like to start my family photoshoots with staged photos while the kiddos aren’t too squirrelly, and then once we get those knocked out, I like to move on to free play. I’ll prompt here and there as needed, but I really like to let the kids just freely be themselves. I want to capture your relationships as they are. The sweet laughter, the tired snuggles, the crazy faces they make while they run… Your kids being your kids. Children grow up so quickly. The moments are fleeting. So, I want to help you capture those little details that one day you will look back on and smile with tears in your eyes at how little they used to be, how innocent their smiles, and how easily their laughter came. A photo helps bring those memories back.
