Kansas City Artist Photoshoot

When Christian reached out to me, he was looking for a few headshots that he could use for his artist profile when he would book gigs singing and performing. He wanted something that not only showed his face, but also had a feel that complimented his style of music. The words he most wanted to capture were “raw”, “genuine”, and “introspective”.

Whenever I work with an artist on a shoot that coincides with their music, I always listen to their music before brainstorming. It may sound obvious, but I try to be careful not to get preconceived ideas without hearing the vibe of the music the artist writes.

After hearing his work, Christian and I sent voice messages back and forth so that I could make sure I correctly interpreted the feel he wanted his music to evoke. I then shared some ideas I had, and he shared his, and with all of that collaboration in mind, I searched out locations and I sketched on paper the various ideas I had for the shoot.

For me, artist shoots tend to be pretty involved on the front end, because I really want to make sure I encompass what the artist is looking for. I ALWAYS PRAY over each artist shoot, asking the Lord to give me ideas and listening for what He speaks and feels for His beloved musician. I find I get the best ideas when I partner with the Holy Spirit to design a concept. I also love when I get a chance to hear from an artist what their music means to them, because I find it helps me deeply connect with the music and come up with ideas.
